Abstract

One of the oldest surviving sackbuts, dated 1581, shows three main elements--mouthpiece, slide, and bell section--each marked distinctively, showing that they come from the same Nuremburg workshop. The inner slides have stockings, evidently original. One of the flat slide stays is pierced to receive a lever (now missing). A peculiar tuning system, allowing the bell to be extended from the rear bow, was provided at a later data, possibly replacing an earlier system of the same kind. This feature has also led to the replacement of the bell stay. (author)
