Abstract
An examination of museum conservation practice--in particular rules for soldering, polishing, and the removal of dents--as they relate to restorers' actual practices. Restoration can lessen an instrument's value to historical research; performance on restored original instruments should be discouraged in favor of modern replicas. (author)
