Abstract
Performance on Baroque and Classic horns requires an original mouthpiece as well. Historically, hornists were limited to either the high or low range, and the mouthpiece used supported this division. A hornist now needs to play the entire range, and the old mouthpiece causes difficulties. These can be reduced if one uses a late 18th-c. French mouthpiece, as the thickness and diameter of the rim recommended for first and second horn players are quite similar to modern rim dimensions. (Schreur, Philip E.)
